Did you know...

There are about 32 different rattlensnake species in the United States alone, with 15 of those species being Arizona natives. Even more, there are approximately 83 subspecies in the United States as well!

The most distinct feature of the rattlesnake is of course their characteristic rattle, which is made up of loosely connected segments made of keratin, which is the same thing that your fingernails are made of! Baby rattlesnakes are born (they don't hatch out of eggs!) with no rattle. Despite common belief, a rattlesnake's rattle does not indicate the exact age of the individual snake - rather, each time the snake sheds a new segment is added to the rattle. This means the number of segments on a rattle can be used to roughly estimate a snakes age, but it is not a perfect method as some snakes can shed multiple times a year and parts of the rattle can even break off.

Rattlesnakes only bite to capture prey or as a form of self-defense, and in about 25% of all rattlesnake bite incidents, no venom is injected. Rattlesnakes are more scared of you than you are of them! The best way to avoid being bitten by a rattlesnake is to avoid harassing or attempting to kill them, as these instances are when most rattlesnake bites occur. Instead, contact a wildlife control company that can come safely remove and relocate the snake - that way everybody wins!
