The North American luna moth (Actias luna) is in the family Saturnidae, considered a saturn moth or silkmoth. They are one of the largest species of moths native to North America. Their striking green coloration, flowing tails, and large size make them an entomological icon of the Americas.

Luna moth caterpillars can emit clicking noises using their serrated mandibles and regurgitate their intestinal contents as defense mechanisms. It is thought that adult luna moths have evolved their iconic long hindwing tails as a means of defense against predators like bats, with the idea being that their tails flowing and moving as the insect flies works to confuse a bat's echolocation and makes it more difficult for a bat to precisely locate a luna moth in space.
