Did you know...
The bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) is a large vulture species, with individuals able to reach a wingspan of over 7 feet! This bird of prey is considered monotypic, meaning the bearded vulture is the only member of the genus Gypaetus. Incredibly, they are also the only known vertebrate whose diet consists mostly of bone!
The bearded vulture is able to subsist almost entirely on bones due to having incredibly acidic stomach acid, estimated to have a pH of 1. Because of this acidity, a bearded vulture can digest a large bone in about 24 hours! They routinely will break apart bones too large for them to swallow whole by grasping them in their talons, flying up high, and dropping the bones on the ground to shatter them. They are sometimes also called "ossifrage", which is derived from the Latin word "ossifragus", which literally translates to "bone-breaker".
