There are over 1,000 different species of tarantula that have been discovered worldwide, and due to their typically secretive nature there are new species being discovered and described every year! Tarantula species are separated into two categories: New World and Old World.

New World tarantulas are all species native to North, Central, and South America. These species are typically stockier, heavier, and relatively slow-moving. Unique to new world tarantulas is the presence of urticating hairs, which are tiny, irritating hairs located on the spider's abdomen that the spider can kick off their body to deter predators. New World tarantulas have less potent venom than Old World species; oftentimes their bites are compared to a bee sting!

Old World tarantulas are all species native to Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe. These species are typically lanky and fast-moving, with many species specializing in fossorial (burrowing) or arboreal (tree-living) lifestyles. Old World species lack urticating hairs for defense, which they make up for with faster movement, more potent venom, and fiesty personalities. Many Old World tarantula species are known to exhibit incredibly beautiful chromatic coloration, with some species exhibiting electric blue, metallic purple, and vibrant orange coloring!
