Did you know...
The Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is a medium-sized bat species native to the Americas and the Caribbean. These bats are referred to as "free-tailed" bats because their tails are not connected to the uropatagium, which is the thin membrane that stretches from and typically connects the hind legs to the tail.
This bat species is said to have the fastest horizontal flying speed of any animal, being able to move up to 99 miles per hour in the air. They also fly the highest of any bat species, known to reach altitudes of up to 3,300 meters!
Mexican free-tailed bats are regarded as one of the most populous mammals in North America, though despite this they are still of conservation concern as they have a tendency to roost is large numbers of up to 1.5 million individuals! This makes them extremely susceptible to communicable disease and habitat degradation.
