The greater roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is a common sight in the Southwestern United States, though their native range can extend as far east as Missouri and as far south as Michoacan in Mexico. 

They spend most of their time on the ground and are able to run up to 20 miles per hour, as well as being capable of limited flight. 

Greater roadrunners are monogamous and mate for life, living solitary lives until they find a mate. They breed from March to September, with both male and female contributing to building the nest. They will lay between 3 and 6 eggs, and the young roadrunners will leave the nest at about 3 months old. Greater roadrunners have also been known to lay eggs in the nests of other birds such as the common raven and northern mockingbird.

These birds are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on a large variety of small prey including lizards, snakes, insects, arachnids, small birds, bird eggs, and a variety of plants.
