The desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is a critically endangered species residing in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts in the southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. These tortoises live between 70-80 years on average, making them extremely slow growing and slow to reproduce. 

The desert tortoise is known as a keystone species, meaning that the presence or absence of these tortoises helps indicate the health of an ecosystem. One of the important benefits they provide as a keystone species is referred to as ecosystem engineering. Desert tortoises are considered ecosystem engineers because since they spend about 95% of their life in burrows, a single tortoise can dig about 12 different burrows in a year. These burrows are not only used by desert tortoises, but also provide important shelter spaces for other animals like snakes, lizards, birds, and small mammals.

Since these tortoises depend so heavily on accessible burrows or sites to dig burrows, protection of the public land that many individuals live on is integral to their continued survival. Land development projects directly interfere with the ability of desert tortoise populations to grow, breed, and survive in the extreme temperatures of the desert. The biggest conservation concerns for this species are habitat loss and spread of disease.
