Promethea Silkmoth (Callosamia promethea) Moth Insect Specimen Frame

The promethea moth (Callosamia promethea) is a sexually dimorphic species of silkmoth native to central and Eastern United States. This specimen is a female, indicated by her rustic warm-toned coloration and patterns. The males of this species are smaller with much darker brown coloration with few patterns. The males of this species utilize a defensive mechanism called Batesian mimicry, where their colors are meant to look like a poisonous butterfly (specifically the spicebush swallowtail) to deter predators, when the moth itself is not toxic.

This specimen is part of my "Kintsugi Bugs" collection! Kintsugi Bugs are specimens that have lived full lives, indicated by their tattered wings. Inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, I repair the damaged wings with small, delicate pieces of gold flake to represent the beauty of their resilience and the idea that change and transformation come with struggle, but can end up being beautiful as well.

This specimen is mounted in a white 5"x5" frame. It includes a hook on the back for wall mounting, as well as an easel stand to be stood on a shelf or mantle!
