The rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) is an iconic species of saturn moth native to the United States and parts of Canada. They are the smallest species of saturn moth in the world! Like other members of the Saturniidae family, rosy maple moths emerge from their cocoons with no mouthparts, instead subsisting on the nutrient stores built up as a caterpillar. This unfortunately means that adult moths only typically live about 2-5 months.

This specimen is part of my "Kintsugi" collection! Kintsugi specimens are those that have lived full lives, indicated by their tattered wings. Inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, I repair the damaged wings with small, delicate pieces of gold flake to represent the beauty of their resilience and the idea that change and transformation come with struggle, but can end up being beautiful as well.

This specimen is mounted in a light wood 4"x4" frame. It includes a hook on the back for wall mounting, as well as an easel stand to be stood on a shelf or mantle! The specimen is a real preserved moth professionally prepared and mounted by myself. For information on ensuring your taxidermy specimen lasts a lifetime, please visit my FAQ page!
