The forest giant owl (Caligo eurilochus) is a large Nymphalid butterfly native to Mexico, Central America, and South America, including the Amazon River Basin. This species is among the largest butterflies in the world! This specimen has been prepared to show the underside of the butterfly, where the intricate brown patterning and large yellow eyesports can be seen. Their eyespots are an evolutionary adaptation meant to ward off predators!
