Did you know...
The white-throated woodrat (Neotoma albigula) is a large rodent species native to the southwestern United States, with its' range extending as far east as Texas. White-throated woodrats are also referred to as "packrats" because of their habit of creating middens, which are nests made of various materials including sticks, leaves, cactus parts, and other debris. These middens have been found preserved for thousands of years, including their contents, and are incredibley useful for scientists studying ancient southwestern plant communities and how climate has varied over time!
Due to their nesting habits, white-throated woodrats are often considered pests throughout their native range. Despite this, they have proven themselves to be incredibly resilient and adaptable creatures, with the oldest known fossil specimens being at least 155,000 years old!
