The state of Arizona is home to over 1,000 different species of moths! While most people think of moths as "dull" or "boring to look at", there is actually a huge number of moth species that exhibit striking, vibrant coloration and intricate patterns. Even Arizona has a number of colorful moths, including the iconic white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata) and the big and bold typhon sphinx (Eumorpha typhon). Many of our native desert plants have evolved alongside various moth species, so much so that certain plants can only be pollinated by certain types of moths!
